KHOU-TV/Channel 11 Marks One Year Anniversary of Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike hit the Galveston coast at 2:10 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2008 causing widespreaad damage and devastation. The Category 2 storm knocked out power in two million homes. Hundreds of thousands of residents experienced property damage. Hundreds lost their homes altogether.

One year later, KHOU-TV Channel 11 continues to takes a look back with a commemorative DVD, “Overcoming Ike—Standing by You.” The DVD is available to order online at www.khou.com for $11.00 with proceeds benefiting the American Red Cross Greater Houston Area Chapter or you can purchase them directly from the Red Cross store located at 2700 SW Freeway, Houston TX 77098.

The DVD features an exclusive collection of more than 500 photos depicting how the Galveston area beachfronts have been impacted by Hurricane Ike. Following the storm, former 11 News Chief Meteorologist and former Director of the National Hurricane Center Dr. Neil Frank flew over the affected areas capturing photos of the exact locations he had also chronicled in 2003 and 2006.

The collection of photos includes eye-opening before and after comparisons of Bermuda Beach, Sand Hill to Jamaica Beach, Palm Beach to Pirates Beach, the Bolivar Peninsula, Treasure Isle, Bay Harbor to Sea Isle and Gilchrist. In addition to the photos, the DVD includes an informative PowerPoint slideshow narrated by Dr. Frank, as well as the one-hour television program “Overcoming Ike—Standing by You,” a six-month anniversary special produced by Channel 11. The special contains Channel 11 News coverage that many viewers without power never saw.
