Memorial Day: Red Cross has helped U.S. military since the Spanish-American War

From ministering to soldiers on the battlefields of the Spanish-American War to serving today alongside military personnel in the Middle East, the American Red Cross has been supporting the United States armed forces for more than 100 years.
Through its Service to Armed Forces, Red Cross employees and volunteers are present on 58 military installations around the world, including a presence in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. About 500 times each day, the Red Cross connects service members with their loved ones through its emergency communications program, as well as handling casework, counseling, social services referrals and emergency financial assistance back home.
In observance of Memorial Day, the Red Cross takes this opportunity to detail the history of its Service to Armed Forces program - how it supports the men and women who serve our country, and helps sustain their families back home too.
