STOCK GIFTS
The Red Cross is delighted to accept gifts of appreciated stock. In recent years, many individuals have enjoyed significant gains in the stock market and other investments. If you own stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have appreciated in value, you have a unique opportunity to realize tax savings by making an outright gift of stock!
First, you may earn a federal income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities as long as you have owned them for longer than one year. Second, you may avoid all of the capital gains tax that would be due on the sale of the securities.
Here's an example:
John has committed to making a sizable gift to help the American Red Cross in Greater Houston. He owns $20,000 worth of stock that he purchased 3 years ago for $5,000. If John sold the stock, he would realize a capital gain of $15,000. Listed below are two alternatives to making his gift.

Giving stock helps us help your neighbors, and may be a very tax-wise way to make a gift. The procedure is simple. We’ll be delighted to walk you through the process or work directly with your broker.
Your personal financial situation is unique; therefore, you should discuss your estate plans with your family and financial and legal advisers before making any charitable gift.
For additional information, please contact Betty Karlsson, Major Gift Officer, 713-313-1657.
DONATE THROUGH YOUR EMPLOYER
Matching Gifts -- Your gift could be matched dollar for dollar!
Many companies offer matching gift programs that will double, even triple a donation's value. Check with your company to find out if your company will match your contribution to the Greater Houston Area Chapter of American Red Cross.
Once you have determined that your company matches donations made to the Red Cross, obtain the appropriate form from your personnel/human resources office and send it with a copy of your gift receipt to the address below:
Greater Houston Area American Red Cross
ATTN: Development
P.O. Box 397
Houston, TX 77001
Please be sure to complete the entire donor portion of the form and to include a copy of your gift receipt (if available). If you would like to designate the gift to a specific program, please indicate that on the form. If you have questions about your company's matching gift program, please contact your personnel/human resources office.
Matching Volunteer Hours – Your volunteer hours could be matched with real dollars! Many companies are matching their employees' community volunteer hours with financial donations!
Call your personnel/human resources office to find out if your company matches gifts or volunteer hours.
DONATE GOODS
The Red Cross is unable to accept small, individual donations or collections of items such as clothing, food or cleaning supplies. The cost to sort, package and distribute these types of donations to disaster victims is greater than the cost of purchasing the items locally, and it is logistically impossible to distribute a wide variety of individual items in a meaningful way.
Because of these cost and logistical concerns, we recommend that you support your community by donating these items to an organization that is equipped to put them to the best possible local use.
Call 2-1-1 for a list of organizations in your area that can accept gifts of this nature or visit www.unitedwayhouston.org
Offers of sizeable, bulk donations are reviewed to determine if they meet a current need for disaster victims that can be addressed by the Red Cross. These bulk donations are typically new, shrink-wrapped and palletized items, which are transported by the donor.
If you would like to discuss this type of donation, please contact Dory Cayten, Deputy Director, 713-313-1668.
DONATE BY INSTANT MESSAGING
Though we're most visible after hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and tornadoes, we also respond to the needs of families affected by destructive home fires every day. You don't have to get the nation's attention to get ours. Even if it involves just one person or one family, a disaster can be devastating if it happens to you. The i'm Initiative is a new program that connects you with the disaster relief efforts of the American Red Cross through Windows Live™ Messenger.
By participating in the I'm Initiative and selecting the Red Cross as your charity of choice, you will generate funds for Red Cross disaster relief with every instant message conversation you have using i'm. These funds won't come from your pocket, but from Microsoft, who will share a portion of the program's advertising revenue with the Red Cross. With no set limit on the amount donated, the more i'm conversations you have, the more you will help the Red Cross respond to disasters of every size and scope. The Red Cross is guaranteed a minimum donation of $100,000 by Microsoft during the first year of the program. There is no fee for joining or using Windows Live Messenger, and signing up is quick and easy.
