Non-Emergency Health & Human Services Transportation

The American Red Cross of the Greater Houston Area Chapter has been providing transportation in Greater Houston since World War II.

As times have changed, the Red Cross has adapted and re-designed its transportation service to meet the needs of the community.  We understand the necessity of transportation for people who are elderly; people with disabilities; and people who are chronically ill.  We know that Red Cross Transportation Services are more than just a ride.

Our services provide our clients with enhanced mobility, a reduction in isolation, and more independence.

The Greater Houston Area American Red Cross provides Transportation Services through contractual agreements with local organizations, through a self-pay program for persons who are able to share the cost of the ride, and through our Community Services program which operates at no charge to our clients.  All Red Cross Transportation Services are door-to-door service, and when necessary, hand-to-hand service. Red Cross Transportation Services operates in both Harris and Fort Bend Counties.

The Red Cross Community Services program provides non-emergency medical transportation and is possible because of the investment by the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast and donations from individuals, foundations and corporations.  Because the program operates through the generosity of local donors, capacity is limited.  It is best to reserve a ride at least 2 weeks in advance, and you may reserve up to 30 days in advance.

In August of 2008, the Ambassador program was introduced into Red Cross Transportation.  This program provides 6 of our routes with an Ambassador on board to assist customers to and from their doors.  They also assist clients with Alzheimer’s and age-related dementia into facilities, and hand them off to a care-giver or social worker.  The Ambassador program has proven to be very successful, and is an added benefit for our clients.

For those clients able to share the cost of the ride, but who have no access to public transportation, Red Cross provides a self-pay program.  The fees are based on the mileage of the trip, and operate along the same routes as the Community Service program.

All Red Cross Transportation is a shared-ride service, so passengers will ride with other passengers to and from their destinations.  Red Cross Transportation Services is available Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.  Red Cross makes every effort to accommodate passenger requests for service and to accommodate passenger schedules.  To better ensure space is available on the date/time of your transportation need, please make your reservation as far in advance as possible.
