Disaster Services Classes

Disaster training is offered every other month through 4-day mini-institutes at the Greater Houston Area Red Cross Chapter Headquarters at 2700 Southwest Freeway, Houston. Disaster classes are also offered at various other times, both at Chapter Headquarters and at the Houston area branch offices. In addition, some disaster classes may be taken as online self-study courses.
The online course Introduction to Disaster Services and the instructor-led course Fulfilling Our Mission should be your first Red Cross disaster classes.  You may click on the link to take Introduction to Disaster Services, but for other disaster courses you must register through the Red Cross Learning Management System -- explained later on this page.

The American Red Cross Learning Management System (LMS)
Accessing the LMS from any computer with an Internet connection allows you to register for and complete online self-study courses at your own pace. You may also register for instructor-led courses through the LMS, and the system allows you to keep track of your learning history too.  If you have taken any Red Cross class in the Houston area within the past year or so, you probably have an LMS account.

Accessing LMS
The Volunteer Disaster Training Coordinator at distraining@ghac.org will create an account for you and give you your ID and password.  You will need to send the name you plan to use for all your Red Cross records, your email address, and your regular mail address.  LMS communicates through email and identifies you by both your name and your address, so it’s particularly important to put that information into your account.  The system is switching over to a new software platform in July.  More information will be available after that happens.
