Health & Safety Services

Since 1909, the American Red Cross has trained tens of millions of people in First Aid and CPR. Today, Red Cross chapters offer a variety of first aid programs for different age groups and community groups, professional and workplace audiences.

Since 1918 the Houston Red Cross has been offering first aid and water safety courses. The lay-instructor program for safety services began in 1926. In 1962, the Chapter taught "artifical respiration" to 98,000 people.

Today the Chapter's Health & Safety Services offers an array of life saving and  life enhancing programs and services including:

 First Aid/CPR /AED
The Red Cross constantly strives to respond to the preparedness concerns of Americans at home, in school and in the workplace. Today's innovative programs not only address traditional First Aid and CPR, they also include teaching lay persons and professionals how to use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to save victims of sudden cardiac arrest.  All programs emphasize safety and prevention, as well as incorporating the most recent changes in cardiac care. The goal of Red Cross courses is to teach people not only how to respond to injuries, but more importantly, how to prevent them.
The Red Cross Cargiving program includs Babysittering courses.

The Red Cross offers Protect Your Back courses to help prevent back injuries through education.

The mission of the American Red Cross is helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Red Cross not only responds to tens of thousands of disasters each year, but also has responded to many public health emergencies in the past such as the influenza pandemic of 1918.
Scientists have informed organizations in the U.S. and abroad about the significant possibility of an influenza (flu) pandemic occurring. Even though they cannot accurately predict when the next pandemic will occur, or whether the avian influenza (H5N1) virus will cause the next human pandemic, scientists all agree that the best action the public can take is to educate and prepare themselves and their families.

The American Red Cross has been a leader in aquatic education since 1914, and in the Houston area Red Cross has been teaching water safety since 1918. Aquatic programs are offered for all ages and skill levels with a focus on swimming lessons, water safety training and lifeguard training.
