AQUATICS COURSES The American Red Cross has been a leader in aquatic education since 1914 and in the Houston area Red Cross has been teaching water safety since 1918. Aquatic programs are offered for all ages and skill levels with a focus on Learn to Swim and aquatic safety training. Courses include Longfellow's Whale Tales (for children), Lifeguard Training, Learn to Swim (levels I to VI), GuardStart, Community Water Safety and the Aquatic Examiner Service. Charity Navigator

The American Red Cross recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating given. Charity Navigator is a watchdog organization that rates non-profits on their financial health, and accountability and transparency. The ratings are calculated based on criteria like demonstrating financial efficiency, accountability and accuracy; good governance, ethical best practices and commitment to donor rights.

In his notification letter to President and CEO Gail McGovern, Ken Berger, President of Charity Navigator, said, “Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities, and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Approximately a quarter of the charities we evaluate have received our highest rating, indicating that the American Red Cross outperforms most other charities in America.”

Supporting the Houston area community, our state, and our nation through Red Cross disaster work is an exciting and rewarding experience. Disaster training is offered every other month through 4-day mini-institutes at the Greater Houston Area Red Cross Chapter Headquarters at 2700 Southwest Freeway, Houston. Disaster classes are also offered at various other times, both at Chapter Headquarters and at the Houston area branch offices. Disaster training is offered to Red Cross volunteers every other month at the Greater Houston Area Red Cross Chapter Headquarters and also at various other times, both at Chapter Headquarters and at the Houston area branch offices. In addition, some disaster classes may be taken as online self-study courses. If you are not yet a Red Cross volunteer, you need to complete the volunteer application, background check, and orientation before beginning any Disaster Services training.
