Learn to Swim 2011

The 2011 Houston Parks and Recreation Learn-to-Swim program is being offered through a partnership with the Greater Houston Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. It is a program designed to introduce beginning swimmers to water safety, teach basic water skills and improve stroke development. There is even a separate class for adults.
  • Classes are scheduled Tuesday-Friday, each session being 8 meetings.
  • A parent or guardian MUST be present at the pool during each class meeting.
  • No Refunds or make-up classes will be given due to inclement weather conditions or absences.
  • Minimum age requirement for students is six (6) years of age for Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
  • No Refunds will be given once a session has started.
  • Class fee is $25.00 per student.
*Preschool Aquatics
*4-5 years old (Townwood Pool only)
 
Preschool Aquatics class is 30 minutes.  A Parent or Guardian must be present at the pool during each class.
 
 
 Level I Introduction to Water Skills
Helps students feel comfortable in the water. Skills include: water entry & exit, underwater exploration, swim on front & back with arm and leg actions, float on front and back, safety skills.
 
Level II Water Skills
Gives students success with fundamental skills. Skills include: water entries, underwater swim, rolling over, swim on side, float on front and back, treading water, front and back glide, combined strokes on front & back, safety skills.
 
Level III/IV Stroke Development/Improvement
Builds on Aquatic skills through additional practice. Skills include: jump into deep water, survival float, front and back crawl, butterfly kick & body motion, submerge and retrieve an object, dive from kneeling or standing position, safety skills.
Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Skills include: front & back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, safe diving rules, throwing & reaching assists, safety skills.
 
Adult Swim
  These classes are specifically designed for those 18 years of age and older. It is a compilation of all levels designed to introduce the beginning swimmer to water safety, teach basic water skills and improve stroke development. Each class is structured according to the skill levels of the participants.
 
 
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department's 2011 Learn-to-Swim program is now being offered in the evenings at 9 different Houston pools.  Download registration form to sign up today.  Classes start June 14, 2011.
